Senior Web Site Developer

Developed and maintained a collection of complex web sites for a diverse clientele. Worked independently on some projects, and as part of a larger development team on others. Development included tight integration of database back-ends and other integrated systems, and development of content management system (CMS) and other customer-enabling technologies. Worked in a variety of development environments including ASP, PHP, Perl, HTML, DHTML, JavaScript, and CGI.

Some projects included design as well as development, and extensive creation of and manipulation of web site graphics using tools such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Flash.

In addition to primary roll as a senior developer, was also responsible for managing the company's I.T. infrastructure, including an in-house server, workstations, managed Ethernet switches, terrestrial and wireless routers, multiple colocated production servers in a secure facility (web, FTP, SQL, and email), and a point to multipoint VPN.

After relocating to Battle Creek, Michigan, became a principal of CapeLight Corporation (www.capelightcorp.com), a company providing real estate, property management, transporation consulting, and other specialized services to a diverse customer base. Was responsible for all aspects of technology management for the company, including web site and other systems design. Also was the proprieter of GameMover.com, one of the company's specialized services.
 

2000 - 2008

 

CAPERAIL INC. (Cape Cod Central Railroad/Massachusetts Coastal Railroad)
Director of Information Technology

Was completely responsible for all aspects of the company's information technology, from initial specification, through procurement, deployment, and ongoing administration and management. Highlights included:

  • Designed and implemented a network for the railroad from the ground up, including all design, hands-on wiring of the network and physical plant, configuration and deployment of the server and workstations, Internet integration, and specialized application software development and deployment.

  • Was responsible for all webmaster duties at the company, including development and ongoing management of their highly interactive web site, including deep integration with the railroad's online reservation and ticketing system, dinner train menuing system, and railfan contributed photograph database.

  • Developed a complete dinner train reservation and scheduling system based in Perl, utilizing an HTML front-end, and MySQL database back-end.

  • Developed a customized train dispatching and safety system to manage and control freight and passenger train operations throughout eastern Massachusetts.

Also worked directly with the company's principals to develop and design a proposal to the state of Massachusetts in response to a government RFP. As a direct result of that proposal, the company was awarded a ten year contract by the state of Massachusetts to operate most of the freight rail lines in Eastern Massachusetts.

Also actively participated as a member of the company's board of directors, responsible for directing, planning, and managing all aspects of the railroad's operation, product offerings, and services.

Also qualified under NORAC rules for train crew service, and served part-time seasonally as an active train crew member.

THE XENSEI CORPORATION
President and Chief Technical Officer

Founded the Xensei Corporation in 1994, and managed it from 1995 until the sale of the company in 2002. Originally established as an Internet Service provider, providing Internet connectivity and basic Web Hosting services to consumers and businesses, the company evolved under Jeff's management in to a specialized business-to-business web hosting company, and later to an HA (high availability) specialized web and application hosting company, and Internet strategy consulting firm.

Xensei was a pioneering company, and was first to market with many new technologies and services, including; first ISP established on Boston's South Shore, first ISP in the region to offer Web Hosting services, first ISP in Massachusetts to be awarded compatibility certification by Netscape and Shiva Corporation, first regional ISP to deploy a fully redundant and fault-tolerant Internet backbone network, and first Web hosting company to offer SLA guaranteed HA hosting services accessible to small to medium sized businesses.

While at Xensei, developed and deployed the vast majority of the company's infrastructure, most from the ground up, including the fault-tolerant networks, call tracking and customer management (CRM) systems, the company's completely integrated, web based billing system, Xensei's Web Host family of customer administratable Web Hosting and e-mail server products, Xensei's HA server cluster technology, Linux based Internet backbone routers, all internal network wiring, cross-connects, etc.

Was also responsible for many customer site development tasks, including web site design, SQL database integration, application and eCommerce technology integration, network deployment and Internet integration, etc.

Senior Network Consultant

Was responsible for the evaluation, recommendation, and functionality testing of software and hardware products intended to enhance the value of the forthcoming NEC ProServa family of Pentium based server products. Products evaluated included:

Intel's LANDesk Network Management Application Suite
Novell's ManageWise Network Management Application Suite
Intel's "Hobbes" Server Management hardware.
The Frye Utilities
HawkNet's "NetTune" Server performance tuning utility.

Was responsible for the design and development of a Network Management Application Prototype for the forthcoming NEC MIPS based server products.

FIDELITY INVESTMENTS
Senior Network Consultant

Developed networked based document imaging system in Visual Basic utilizing ODBC and various third party add-ins. System included a scaleable back-end database architecture and extensive search capabilities. System was also seamlessly integrated with other Fidelity systems to allow automated faxing, transmission and management of on-line documents. Popularity of the imaging system within various Fidelity business units caused deployment of the imaging system to be extended from its original target of approximately 50 users to hundreds of workstations throughout the Fidelity organization.

Developed a network based customer voice response/automated fax back system in Visual Basic, utilizing Dialogics voice hardware. System was integrated with previously developed document imaging system to allow maintenance free operation.

Developed networked based on-line signature system, used to authorize documentation and reduce paper flow by allowing documents to remain in electronic format through all stages of work flow.

Integrated Microsoft Lan Manager based E-mail system with existing corporate-wide Netware based E-mail system.

Developed a standard workstation configuration utilizing Microsoft Windows For Workgroups, which included Netware and TCP/IP connectivity, while optimizing available workstation resources.

Provided consultation regarding Internet connectivity.

Researched, recommended and deployed dial-in network access using DCA Remote LAN Node.

Established an electronic mail system used to link clients of State Street Bank to the Corporate Trust local area network. Was exclusively responsible for the expansion of the Corporate Trust local area network to a 100+ node network, encompassing workstations located on multiple floors, Eicon based mainframe gateway connectivity, Prime minicomputer integration, inter-network electronic mail, modem and other resource sharing, peer to peer SQL based relational database technology, Cabletron intelligent wiring concentrators, and TCP/IP based host system interconnectivity. Also migrated users to a standardized Microsoft Windows based operating environment, allowing seamless migration to alternative future data processing paths while facilitating simpler training and increased productivity. Assisted in the design of the Corporate Trust department's data processing strategy and technology strategy. Continued to be the primary support and administrative person for the Corporate Trust local area network.

Programmer / Analyst

Coordinated all personal computer usage in the Corporate Trust Department, encompassing all aspects of user support, system design, implementation and documentation. Position also included the development of many Visual Basic, Mainframe Focus, PC Focus and C based systems, including all phases of analysis, design, development, implementation and documentation. Was exclusively responsible for the development, installation, implementation, and administration of a fifty node departmental local area network for the Corporate Trust department, encompassing client-server based hardware, electronic mail and support of many diverse applications. Was responsible for all user training and support for the Corporate Trust local area network.

Account Coordinator III

Was responsible for the coordination of several large Collateralized Mortgage Obligation backed accounts, including the Corporate Trust department's clearing account. Wrote PC based systems which increased clearing account efficiency by more than 500% and allowed future growth in the mixed accounting area to remain unhindered. Spent extensive time as an end user of Focus databases including generation of customized reports.
